Serigraph Sailing Ship by Joe Duncan Gleason. 1881-1959

Framed serigraph of sailing ship. The artist's name is printed in the lower right corner: "J Duncan Gleason". "Facsimile in oil" is printed in the lower left corner. Joe Duncan Gleason is listed in Dawdy, Fieldings, Hughes, Mallet, Moure and Who's. Although he painted portraits and landscapes, he is best known for marine and harbor scenes which were done around San Pedro harbor. He was born in Watsonville, Ca on Aug. 3, 1881. Trained in art at the College of Fine Arts at USC under William Lees Judson, in 1899 he moved to San Francisco and sudied a the Mark Hopkins Institute and worked as a commercial artist for the Sunset Engraving Co. He aso studied at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City, AIC under Vanderpoel and the ASL of NYC under DuMond. After remaining in New York for about ten years, he returned to LA in 1910.
